In particular, Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. offers cutting-edge radar technology for use in the civil sector, featuring high performance, greatly reduced size and high resolution for detecting and identifying surface objects, both mobile and static. These features make it possible to obtain an almost optical picture of the environment, even under adverse weather conditions.

Since Rheinmetall Italia focuses mainly on radar sensors and the management of high-value resources, the company concentrates on microwave technology (antennae, transmitters and receivers) as well as signal and data processing. Among other things, we have successfully developed and produced:

SMART - Surface Movement Advanced Radar Technology
Designed for airport surface safety and security management applications, SMART radar operates in the millimetre waves band at 95 GHz. It can simultaneously perform three important functions in real-time:
foreign object detection (FOD) on runways;
automatic surface traffic (aircraft and vehicles) detections and tracking;
perimeter intrusion detection (persons and vehicles).

SMART radar can operate as a stand-alone radar sensor (integrated with electro-optical devices if required), or as a radar network to exploit its very high-resolution cell. It is available in both single RTX channel and double RTX channel (redundant configuration).
Its very small operating wavelength makes this radar able to detect metallic and dielectric objects on runways, etc., and is thus suitable for FOD applications. Live tests conducted at several airports have demonstrated SMART’s ability to detect (with a one-second updating time) small objects such as bicycle tires, suitcases, badge clips, persons located next to large objects like aircraft, and persons crawling in grassy areas near runways.
The SMART system is designed for 24/7 operation, and can be controlled either remotely or locally via a dedicated control panel. Its modular design facilitates maintenance, supported by an embedded self-diagnostic module for quick, easy detection and isolation of faults.
