Wisent

For many of the world’s armed forces, peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions and the fight against international terrorism have now become the order of the day. In operations like these, being able to recover and evacuate personnel deployed on the ground can be crucial. To accomplish their new tasks effectively, today’s armed forces need highly mobile, well-protected command and multipurpose vehicles, enabling them to conduct command operations whether operating in stationary mode or on the move during fast-paced multinational missions. The Wisent delivers excellent off-road mobility coupled with a high level of crew protection. Hardened against ballistic threats, landmines and roadside IEDs and equipped with an NBC protective ventilation system, the Wisent is one of the best-protected vehicles in its class.

In developing the Wisent, Rheinmetall placed even greater emphasis than usual on modularity in all areas so as to achieve maximum efficiency regarding development and production costs. A high-performance motor-generator unit supplies power to the multipurpose mission module, which also features a multi-voltage power hook-up. This means that the air-conditioned, well-protected multipurpose mission module unit can operate autonomously in detached mode without the engine running. Modularity is the guiding principle at the subassembly level as well. For example, in addition to all-wheel drive with independent wheel suspension, the axle components are designed for optional rear axle steering as well – for the first time in a vehicle in its class. This variability is particularly important in the 6x6, 8x8 and 10x10 transport versions of the Wisent. The use of so many identical parts results in very low lifecycle costs for the entire family of Wisent vehicles.
