The armed forces need a highly mobile and multi-purpose vehicle with a very high level of protection in order to meet their extended range of missions. The Gefas is exceptional in the way it meets these demands: Its level of protection is unique for its weight class and it has excellent capability to drive on bad roads, thus making the Gefas the ideal patrol and convoy escort vehicle. Thanks to its modular design and the many different types of add-on equipment it can be fitted with, the Gefas is capable of operating in missions such as: Convoy protection Patrols Command and control Reconnaissance Air defence Not only that, its flexible configuration potential makes the Gefas a suitable carrier vehicle for a very wide range of sensors and effectors.
The variable modular design of the vehicle allows customers combine various modules to make up different vehicles. The basic configuration of the vehicle comprises a protective module, a power module and two axle modules. A front and a rear module carry other equipment which is required, e.g. lighting, camera system, trailer coupling, multi-function lugs, etc. If the power module is located behind the protective module, the transport or installation area is spacious and can be used for a wide range of different effectors or sensors. If needed, future active equipment can also be fitted on new additional modules. Mechanical and functional interfaces between the modules are standardised to enable rapid installation and setup of any module. An additional battery set creates a redundant energy source and allows the vehicle to keep running on an emergency level even after a total loss of the power module. The design of the Gefas is such that the vehicle still has a minimum level of mobility even if just one axle module is operational in order for the soldiers to get out of life-threatening situations. Maximum redundancy in each assembly is achieved by using two or more axle modules in one vehicle. Growth potential and a guaranteed future bring about optimized logistics relating to repairs, spare parts supplies and lifecycle costs. The innovative concept of the Gefas makes it the vehicle system with the best future in the world when it comes to manufacturing armoured vehicles for military operations.
The Gefas is the result of a joint development venture between Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, ESWGmbH and STWSensor-TechnikWiedemann GmbH. Other companies also involved in the project are IBD Deisenroth Engineering and Timoney Technology LTD.
